Who we are
Stichting Turfvrij is a private initiative to protect peat bogs. Karin and Philipp are the founding members. They are partnering with a growing network of enthusiastic peat bog guardians.
While it's challenging to tell individual stories, as our progress is truly a team effort, we'll do our best to put it on paper for you.
Karin Bodewits
A PhD biologist by training, Karin developed into a science communication expert and writer. Her love for peat bogs started when she saw how we carelessly trample on Europe´s ‘rainforests’, while other ecosystems receive much more attention. She uses her communication skills to show the environmental impact of the horticultural industry and how we could grow plants more sustainably.
Philipp Gramlich
A PhD chemist by training, Philipp has started a company with Karin, where he gives science communication and management workshops. Before that, he worked for two biotechnology companies, enabling him to understand the market players in the peat industry. Born and raised in Germany, he builds bridges to the international peat-free movements.
Joost van Beek
Joost was a manager at the LNV department for many years. He is now secretary of the Alphense Landscape Fund and chairman of the Beekenbos Foundation.
