Our story
When we founded Stichting Turfvrij in 2021, we had one important mission: Peat should remain in the ground, not in our potting soil mix. Because protecting peat also protects the climate, nature, and biodiversity.
But how do you get such a topic to the top of the green agenda? By persevering. As persistent as ground elder in your garden.
Soon there was movement: media picked up our story, a motion was accepted in the national parliament with overwhelming majority, and garden centers began stocking peat-free alternatives. From that moment on, it was clear: peat could no longer be ignored.
We're not only talking: We have signed the Peat Convenant , through which the government, the horticultural sector, and social organizations are working together towards a peat-free future. It's not yet a final victory, but it is a major step forward. After all, even the largest oak starts with a small seed.
The Netherlands still has some catching up to do: in Great Britain, Germany, and Switzerland, the topic has been high on the agenda for some time. That's why we're also collaborating internationally—to make the transition faster and more effective.
What once began as a small initiative has now become a strong movement taking root at all levels of society. And everyone can participate. Every bag of peat-free potting soil, every plant without hidden peat, every time you tell someone about this topic: it contributes to healthy soil and a better climate.
Together we're making gardening peat-free. Will you join us?
