Talk
Peat-free gardening - Sustainable greening in harmony with the soil
Are you looking for an inspiring and stimulating keynote for your members, residents or supporters? This talk about peat-free greening offers fresh insights, practical tools and food for thought for anyone who wants to garden sustainably and strengthen biodiversity — at home, in the neighborhood and in policy.
What can you expect?
✔ How to turn your garden or public green space into a stepping stone for local biodiversity — without peat
✔ Why peat-free potting soil and garden soil are crucial for true sustainability
✔ The harrowing story behind peat extraction: how peatlands – valuable natural areas – are being destroyed for our garden products
✔ Why your garden can never compensate for the nature lost to peat extraction elsewhere
✔ How to take cuttings and grow peat-free yourself
✔ Tips for conscious plant selection: poison-free, peat-free, native and regional
✔ Think beyond “native”: adapt your plants to your soil, not the other way around
This talk fits these settings:
- Nature organisations and ecological foundations
- Libraries with a sustainable or educational program
- Community garden associations, permaculture groups and green networks
- Neighbourhood initiatives and sustainable housing projects
- Municipalities who want to involve green space managers and/or residents in climate adaptation, greening and biodiversity restoration
Peat-free gardening is more than a trend — it's a necessary step toward gardens and neighborhoods that contribute to restoration, rather than damage.

About the speaker
As a biologist and biochemist, I am professionally involved in science, and as a lecturer in science communication at universities, I teach others how to make complex knowledge accessible. But my greatest passion? Gardening and sustainable food production.
I have created a small food forest, a high-stemmed orchard full of fruit trees and a garden bursting with native plants – and the insects and birds that go with them. But no matter how lush and blooming my garden is, I am very concerned about the climate and the decline in biodiversity. That is why I founded the Turfvrij Foundation in 2021, together with Philipp. Because without peat areas we will not achieve the climate goals – and without healthy soils there is no future for nature.
My mission? To show gardeners and organizations that sustainable and regenerative gardening is not only possible, but also the best way to create a beautiful, thriving and healthy garden.
Karin is the author of the book Turf adieu, in which she describes the principles of sustainable gardening at length.
