class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-9451\"><p>Turf lijkt onschuldig in je potgrond, maar de gevolgen van turfwinning zijn groot. We spreken vaak over de\u00a0<strong>vier zonden van turfwinning<\/strong>:<\/p><p><strong>1. Klimaatverandering<\/strong><br \/>Turf is een fossiele brandstof. Zodra het uit het veen wordt gehaald en in je tuin belandt, komt de opgeslagen koolstof vrij als CO\u2082. Veenmoerassen zijn juist enorme koolstofreservoirs \u2013 die moeten we in de grond laten als we de opwarming van de aarde willen tegengaan.<\/p><p><strong>2. Waterproblemen<\/strong><br \/>Veen werkt als een spons: het houdt water vast bij hevige regen en geeft het weer af in droge periodes. Door turfwinning verliezen we dat natuurlijke buffer\u00adeffect. Ironisch genoeg vonden enkele van de zwaarst getroffen gebieden tijdens de overstromingen van 2021 plaats in voormalige veengebieden.<\/p><p><strong>3. Verlies van biodiversiteit<\/strong><br \/>Natuurlijke veengebieden zijn een thuis voor unieke planten en dieren. Als die verdwijnen, verliezen we kostbare natuur. Er bestaan regels om schade te beperken, maar in de praktijk blijken die vaak onvoldoende. Het risico is dat ze vooral als excuus worden gebruikt om turf te kunnen blijven winnen.<\/p><p><strong>4. Bodemdaling<\/strong><br \/>Nederland weet er alles van: onze geschiedenis als turfproducent heeft meegewerkt aan de bodemdaling waardoor grote delen van ons land nu onder zeeniveau liggen. Tegenwoordig importeren we turf, en verplaatsen we die schade naar landen als Letland. Daar ligt bijna al het land laag boven zeeniveau \u2013 precies de plekken waar turfwinning extra risicovol is.<\/p><p>En dat is nog niet alles. Turfwinning zorgt ook voor:<\/p><ul><li><p>watervervuiling<\/p><\/li><li><p>meer risico op brand<\/p><\/li><li><p>stofuitstoot<\/p><\/li><li><p>opwarming van de bodem (tot 2\u00b0C warmer dan de omgeving)<\/p><\/li><li><p>minder wolken en regen door het donkere, kale oppervlak<\/p><\/li><li><p>extra infrastructuur (wegen, drainage) die het landschap blijvend aantast<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>Kortom: turfwinning heeft veel meer negatieve effecten dan je op het eerste gezicht zou denken. Daarom zetten wij ons in voor een\u00a0<strong>turfvrije toekomst<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 goed voor klimaat, water, natuur \u00e9n onze leefomgeving.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-9452\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-9452\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened\"><i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened fas fa-caret-up\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-toggle-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Turfwinning schaadt de biodiversiteit. Is dat nog steeds zo?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-9452\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-9452\"><p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/turfvrij.nl\/en\/peat-extraction-does-take-place-in-previously-undrained-areas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>this article<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by investigative journalists Nathalie Bertrams, Ingrid Gercama and Tristen Taylor, the authors reveal that peat extraction is still taking place in previously undrained areas.<\/p><p>We have European regulations protecting valuable habitats and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.responsiblyproducedpeat.org\/\"><strong>RPP<\/strong><\/a>scheme, which mandates site selection and after-use rules. So, where is the problem?<\/p><p><strong>Peat extraction leads to a significant loss of biodiversity.<\/strong>\u00a0Unfortunately, the existing rules are not followed well or written in a way that favours excessive and reckless extraction and environmentally inept restoration plans. Some examples:<\/p><p>In Latvia (<a href=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/08\/e4-lv-final.pdf\"><strong>Source<\/strong><\/a>):\u00a0&#8220;The list of protected habitats in Latvia does not include raised bogs,&#8221; &#8220;landowners can drain without the obligation of following any pre-established safeguards,&#8221; &#8220;If peat extraction is proposed in a Natura 2000 site, a specific order must be applied (Cabinet Regulation No. 300 (19\/04\/2011). Peat extraction and\/or extension of the existing peat extraction areas in Natura 2000 areas are possible only in very few exceptional cases (Gauja National Park, Pape Nature Park with ongoing peat extraction&#8221; &#8220;After-use of post-harvested peatlands can be as follows: re-naturalisation (restoration of mire or other type of wetland), creation of agricultural lands, afforestation, creation of water bodies for use in recreation&#8221; &#8220;many extracted peatlands are abandoned without re-cultivation.&#8221;<\/p><p>In Lithuania (<a href=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/08\/e4-lt-final.pdf\"><strong>Source<\/strong><\/a>):\u00a0&#8220;conflicting situation due to different regulations, set in the laws of Protected sites and Forestry. For example, according to Forestry law, after clearing the vegetation in wetland, cleared site must be replanted within 3 years period (par.5) while law of Protected sites requires to keep such site open.&#8221; &#8220;Law on Land Reclamation (approved by Seimas on December 9, 1993, Resolution No. I-323) and all its versions does not mention peatlands&#8221; &#8220;protected sites are still appointed as sites for excavation&#8221; &#8220;only few cases of re-cultivation in completely extracted peatlands because most of peatlands are treated as &#8216;active&#8217;. However, abandoned peatlands remain in such status for years without any kind of restoration or further usage.&#8221; &#8220;Abandoned peatlands have no regulation.&#8221; &#8220;\u2026hydrological regime may not be changed. We hebben helaas het in het verleden heel veel veen in Nederland gewonnen. Echter, Nederland is de grootste turf importeur van Europa. Zaailingen of stekjes die thuis worden opgekweekt, staan meestal maar kort in een potje voordat ze de volle grond ingaan. In zulke gevallen is gewone tuinaarde of gezeefde compost (eventueel vermengd met wat zand) ruim voldoende.\u00a0<\/p><p>Ook bij het vullen van grote plantenbakken gebruiken veel mensen gewoon tuinaarde \u2014 dat werkt prima.<\/p><p><strong>Waarom gebruiken we toch vaak potgrond?<\/strong><\/p><p>Veel potgrond op de markt is goedkoop, vooral omdat het grotendeels uit turf bestaat. Turf is echter milieubelastend: de kosten van turfwinning (zoals schade aan natuurgebieden en uitstoot van CO\u2082) zijn niet in de prijs verwerkt. Daardoor lijkt potgrond een voordelige keuze, terwijl het enorm schadelijk is. Als je toch kiest voor een potgrond, kies dan voor een turfvrije variant.\u00a0<\/p><p>Kort samengevat: Gebruik potgrond alleen als het \u00e9cht nodig is \u2014 zoals bij het zaaien of stekken van kwetsbare plantjes. Voor alles daarna (zoals het vullen van potten of borders) volstaat tuinaarde, compost of de bestaande tuingrond prima. Een pH-waarde onder de 4,5 wordt beschouwd als sterk zuur en is doorgaans ongunstig. In Nederland zijn veel bodems inmiddels zo ver verzuurd, onder meer door intensieve veehouderij en stikstofneerslag. Daardoor kunnen zuurminnende soorten zich ook vestigen op plekken waar ze oorspronkelijk niet thuishoren \u2014 en soms is de bodem zelfs voor hen al aan de zure kant zonder menselijk ingrijpen.<\/p><p>Het idee dat we onze tuinen actief moeten \u201cverzuren\u201d stamt uit een andere tijd, waarin de bodem nog beter in balans was. Tegenwoordig draagt het gebruik van turf vaak juist bij aan het versterken van een bestaand probleem.<\/p><p>Wie beschikt over een kalkrijke bodem met een relatief hoge pH, heeft in Nederland eerder een uitzondering dan de regel in handen. Dat is iets om te waarderen, niet om aan te passen. Dat is &#8220;het beste van het slechtste.&#8221; Oftewel, het is beter dan turf zonder dit label, maar hier worden nog steeds waardevolle veengebieden voor afgegraven.\u00a0<\/p><p data-start=\"184\" data-end=\"484\">De RPP-regeling is bedoeld om turfwinning te beperken tot al eerder aangetaste veengebieden (lees: dus gebieden met zeer hoge natuurwaarden, zoals een Natura 2000, gebied mogen onder deze regeling niet worden afgegraven) en stelt bovendien eisen aan het herstel en nagebruik van afgegraven moerassen. In theorie kan zo\u2019n systeem helpen om verdere schade aan natuur en biodiversiteit te beperken \u2013 mits het juist wordt toegepast.<\/p><p data-start=\"486\" data-end=\"526\">Toch zijn er belangrijke kanttekeningen:<\/p><ul data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"1187\"><li data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"939\"><p data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"939\"><strong data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"577\">Ruime interpretatie van herstel:<\/strong><br data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"580\" \/>De RPP schrijft dat herstel moet plaatsvinden \u201czo dicht mogelijk bij de oorspronkelijke natuur, voor zover praktisch haalbaar.\u201d Mooi geformuleerd, maar ook erg open voor vrije interpretatie. Daardoor blijft schadelijk en goedkoop nagebruik \u2013 zoals het bebossen van veengebieden, wat volgens het IPCC juist extra CO\u2082-uitstoot veroorzaakt \u2013 mogelijk binnen de regels.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"1187\"><p data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"1187\"><strong data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"973\">Moreel comfort:<\/strong><br data-start=\"973\" data-end=\"976\" \/>\u2018Verantwoord gewonnen turf\u2019 kan een geruststellend idee geven: alsof het probleem daarmee opgelost is. Zo ontstaat het risico\u00a0 dat de urgentie om turfvrij te worden afneemt, omdat men denkt al \u2018goed bezig\u2019 te zijn.\u00a0<strong>Dat terwijl RPP &#8220;het beste van het slechtste is.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1485\">We horen signalen dat de RPP-regeling inmiddels wordt aangescherpt, wat hoopgevend is. Maar uiteindelijk staat of valt het succes met de vraag: nemen alle betrokken partijen hun verantwoordelijkheid \u00e9cht serieus? 'Good Coir' is washed and processed closer to the consumer in accordance with strict social and environmental standards.<\/p><p>A certification scheme, Responsibly Produced Coir is currently being set up, reminiscent of the established RPP (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.responsiblyproducedpeat.org\/\"><strong>Responsibly' 'Produced' Peat<\/strong><\/a>) certification scheme.
